The origins of the pontoon boat are much older than you might think. The earliest such ones are thought to date back to the 11th century BC, when the Chinese dynasty used them to create bridges for soldiers. But the modern pontoon boat was invented in 1951. It was the American Ambrose Weeres who developed it to travel with his family the many lakes of his hometown, Minnesota. Called Empress, it is a simple wooden board installed on two steel barrels. Weeres Industry Corporation, the first company to manufacture pontoon boats, was founded in 1952. In the late 1950s, steel floats were replaced by aluminum to make them lighter, and in the 1960s, boats were equipped with many of the seats and furniture we know today.
