The Wadvogel 38 was designed by Dutch multihull designer Jan Bart de Jong, who was also the boat's first owner. Its consistently lightweight concept, with two slender wooden hulls, an open bridge deck and daggerboards, makes the Wadvogel an unusual example of the classic lightweight cruising catamaran.

At 11.40 m long and 6.40 m wide, the catamaran weighs only 3.1 t. With the daggerboards raised, draft is just 0.45 m. The reinforced lower hull/keel areas and shallow draft are part of the original concept for shallow-water cruising and drying out.

Interior

The two hulls have a simple but functional interior. Five cabins or sleeping areas separated by curtains provide a total of six berths, including one double berth. Galley with cooker, sink and insulated cool box, as well as a Thetford chemical toilet. There are no through-hull fittings below the waterline.

Sails, propulsion and equipment

North Sails fully battened mainsail 29 m² (2021, 3 reefs), jib 12 m² and genoa/jib 25.2 m² (both 2017), plus a 103 m² blister. Yamaha FT9.9 high-thrust outboard (2021), 200 Ah LiFePO4 battery (2024), 700 W solar system with Victron MPPT, Raymarine autopilot, ICOM VHF radio with GPS and Weatherdock AIS.

Condition

The Wadvogel is deliberately being offered ashore in its current condition. There is a localised area of moisture-related wood damage in the readily accessible cockpit floor. The currently estimated area is approximately 0.5 m²; the actual extent of the repair can only be determined once the area is opened. The cockpit floor is made of plywood. For an appropriate repair, I would recommend high-quality marine plywood, preferably okoumé.

In addition, some small local areas of paint/coating require attention, the antifouling should be renewed before launching, and the worn surfaces at the lower guides of both daggerboard cases should be locally refinished. Apart from these points, the seller is not aware of any further repair requirements that would prevent normal use of the boat.

The underwater hull was thoroughly inspected ashore; no blistering, delamination or major damage was apparent during the inspection.

Documentation and handover

Extensive historical construction drawings and boat documentation are available, together with documentation for many of the more recent components.

The boat is currently ashore in Lübeck and fully covered. Launching by mobile crane and stepping the mast can be arranged locally. Viewing is possible by prior telephone arrangement.

The Wadvogel is intended to find a new owner soon and can be handed over at short notice following full payment.
