Owner speaks : Our Southerly 42 was our first own boat. Before that, we had only chartered. When choosing the boat, we had clear criteria based on our family situation and the cruising grounds where we wanted to sail. We were looking for a deck saloon yacht, as we liked the idea of living with daylight and a great view of the landscapes we would be traveling through, even in bad weather in the cold North. With three growing children, we needed space, and for the skipper, who is 1.92 m tall, it was important to be able to stand upright, especially in the bathroom and the galley. It had to be a safe boat, one that sails dry even in heavy weather and has enough speed potential to comfortably manage long day passages. We still find the swing keel very convincing. The shallow draft greatly increases the choice of berths and anchorages. We have often benefited from this. Drying out is also easy and allows for great experiences. Our Southerly has fulfilled all the expectations we had of her. With her, we have broadened our sailing horizons more than we could have imagined when we bought the boat. That is the only reason we are selling her, to have a new boat built for the final chapter of our sailing life. What new criteria come into play given our future sailing plans? Our next yacht will be designed throughout the entire energy system for true long-distance cruising and for living mostly at anchor. We will downsize a little, as our children are now grown and no longer accompany us all at the same time. We wish the new owners to feel as safe and comfortable on board their Southerly as we have. It is a wonderful yacht for unforgettable moments and beautiful memories, perfect for families as well as couples. And thanks to the bow and stern thrusters, it is also easy to sail single-handed.
